John Kay and Sons, Wine Merchants traded from 39 Jamaica Street supplying fine wines and spirits for the domestic and international market. Their closure in the seventies sadly concluded over 150 years of excellence, which had earned the company immense respect. Thereafter trading as a Public House, the mantle of John Kay has been upheld. Unerring attention to quality has culminated in acknowledgement as Edinburgh’s Premier Cask Ale-House.
Kay’s is an exceptionally well-preserved Victorian Bar, with many interesting features throughout the premises. The internal signage around the frieze, the barrels, panelling, cast-iron pillars and the safe are some of the original fittings.

“My adult children decided to try Kay’s Bar as the start point for their novice attempt at pub crawling. They didn't make it many pubs further. As a veteran crawler of many decades I would certainly choose Kay’s Bar on future visits to Edinburgh. A hidden gem!”

“We always start at Kay’s on our annual pilgrimage from Newcastle. They are always very friendly and accommodating despite the fact we can be a tad loud at times! Beers always very well kept. Thanks all at Kay’s Bar and see you next year. Love the Neck Oil.”

“This is a proper pub, off the beaten track and worth seeking out. We used it walking back from Stockbridge Market, which itself is well worth a visit.”
